The Sixth Street Viaduct: The Journey So Far
The new Sixth Street Viaduct, which opened to the public in July, has been welcomed by the community in more ways than we ever imagined! Since the opening, the viaduct has been filled with families and friends coming to watch the sunset, people walking dogs, runners, walkers, skateboards and thousands of bikes. The viaduct is providing access to thousands of people, bridging the communities of Boyle Heights and the Arts District.
We are continuing to make improvements to the bridge to provide enhanced safety measures and even more access to the community. This includes adding guard rails to the five sets of stairs around the viaduct, which will allow pedestrians to access the bridge deck from the ground level and placing Botts’ dots between traffic lanes to help divide opposing traffic. These improvements along with consistent maintenance and cleaning ensure that the bridge can be enjoyed by all for years to come.
A big thank you to the community members who are tagging us on social media. Through you, we are able to see the viaduct in action, such as photo shoots and family outings, drone footage, and running and cycling clubs. We are happy to see the community take full advantage of all the benefits this viaduct has to offer.
